Though his collection of work is visually aligned with traditional wood firing practices, Zhang opts for an experimental approach to firing. The artist alternatively incorporating ash into his proprietary glaze recipes or dusts the exterior of a form with powdered wood ash while the glaze has yet to dry. Fired to cone 10 in a traditional gas kiln, the artist manages to capture the same spirit and fluctuating nature of atmospherically fired stoneware, with varied surface texture, undulating colors, and unexpected beauty marks in the glaze work.

These tea servers are hand thrown and trimmed on the potter’s wheel, and feature an expertly formed spout allowing for a clean pouring experience. High-fired stoneware is suitable for use with all tea types.
