There is an impressive gravity to the work of Taiwanese potter, Zhang Hao Yan, yet his mastery and materiality always stop shy of sobriety. Each of his pieces exudes an undeniable playfulness often displayed via the lines and profiles of each vessel, creating personality through form.

Thrown from grog-rich stoneware clay, this tea server is thrown and trimmed by hand on the potter’s wheel and displays the slightest hint of a blush from the wood fired kiln. This subtle undulation in color, texture, and iridescence is the result of ash and flame as they traveled along channels of air in through the wood burning chamber of the kiln and up through the chimney, leaving behind a trail of heat and color. Each of Zhang Hao Yan’s pieces undergoes more than 5 days in this state, building up their tactile surface.
