Tea bowls offer the coziest - and easiest - method of tea brewing. Simply prewarm the bowl with a hot water rinse, add a small handful of tea leaves, then fill two thirds of the way with hot water. As the leaves slowly unfurl, the flavor of your tea will evolve, offering hours of warm company. The bowl can be refilled with water as needed.
The best tea bowls for this brewing style act like extensions of the hand, vessels intended to be cradled throughout the day. Taiwanese potter, Zhang Hao Yan is a master of this form, each bowl gently curved and sized to hold close. Thrown from dark stoneware and trimmed by hand on the potter’s wheel, the surface is colored in burnt siennas and umbers, the marks of ash and flame on their pathways through the wood-fired kiln. The vessel appears somewhat volcanic in nature, an echo of the natural warmth tea bowl drinking provides.
Usage and care: To wash, simply rinse between uses or hand scrub. We do not recommend use of detergent.
