Precision and spontaneity are at odds in the work of Huang Li Chia’s ceramic work, thrown from a gravity defying stoneware clay. From her studio in South Eastern Taiwan, shared with her woodworking partner, the artist considers functionality, expression, and beauty as she creates pieces pared back to reveal each element at its most foundational, in an incredibly successful line of teaware.

Tea caddies feature very sparsely in our collection, yet we couldn’t resist the character and charm of Chia’s petite jars; a most delightful accompaniment to the artist’s collection of teapots, servers, and water bowls. A raw stoneware exterior features subtle brushstokes of thin, nearly translucent slip, leaving the natural texture of sand and stone in the clay body visible to both hand and eye. The interior of the piece is lined with glaze, helping keep the oils and aromas of the stored tea safely trapped until ready to brew.

Pictured is one in a series of 2 similar pieces. Slight variations are possible from piece to piece, a hallmark of hand-made pottery. The piece you receive may be different than the one pictured, but will be as beautiful.

Usage: We use tea caddies to hold small amounts of tea leaves during a gong-fu tea session. This caddy can hold up to 40 grams of small leaf green teas, 70 grams of rolled oolongs, or 30 grams of twisted leaf teas.
