Small Belly, Var. 1
Small Belly, Var. 1
From the second collection of budding Taiwanese potter, Zhang Hao Yan, comes a series of teapots of varied size and shapes, woven together with the artist’s experimental glazing techniques.
Eschewing the wood kiln, Zhang instead captures the spirit and fluctuating nature of atmospherically fired stoneware by alternatively incorporating ash into his glaze recipes and dusting the exterior of a form with powdered wood ash while the glaze has yet to dry. Fired to cone 10 in a traditional gas kiln, this mix of glaze and ash gives deeps the surface of the work, stippling the surface of the glaze, pulling out spots of carbon and iron, and burnishing the edges of with a rich hue. The result is a series of teapots with the appearance of weathered temple bells, each unique form chiming a resonant note along a scale.
Each teapot in this collection is hand thrown by the artist, with delicately hand built spouts, handles, and interior sieves, allowing for crisp and clean pouring. High-fired stoneware is suitable for use with all tea types.
This teapot is one of a kind.
