Taiwanese potter Liao Guo Hua is a master of gestural mark-making, and in each of his works we find a veritable Rorschach blot awaiting interpretation. In this pot, blooms of crystalized shino fall across a sky or rutile and cobalt oxide. A landscape emerges from behind a veil of snow, trees buried under a Borealis-bright sky.
Liao Guo Hua’s loose, dreamy marks float and wander in contrast to the form of this pot. The distinct geometry the spout, a sharp horizon line, and the symmetry of the finial finalize Hua’s signature. It’s this tension between hard and soft, delicate and defined, organic and geometric, that lies at the crux of the artist’s work. It’s a contrast that keeps the eye coming back again and again, intent on discovering the work anew.
