Fire Cypress Teapot, Special
Fire Cypress Teapot, Special
Thrown on the potter’s wheel from a luxuriously dark stoneware, this one-off teapot, decorated with a smattering of shino glaze, is fired in the artist’s hand built kiln, fed every few minutes with cord wood for five continuous days.
What emerges from this crucible of fire and ash is a vessel with striking features, surface marked with flashes of luster and iridescence from minerals and carbons wafting through the kiln. The shino glaze, a rich orange before firing, transforms under extreme heat to a pillowy white with tiny crackles, or crazing, that web across the form, deepening in tone as time wears on.
This side handled kyusu style teapot features a unique cypress pine handle, carved by the ceramicist to compliment the shape of the form. Inside, the artist has provided a natural perforated strainer between belly and spout, filtering the leaves from your tea and creating a pour both perfectly balanced and proportioned.
This teapot is one of a kind.
Usage and care: Unglazed wood-fired pieces will season very slowly over time, though limited porosity allows for use of different tea types. Exterior of the teapot will deepen in color and develop a rich luster with use. Hand-wash only without soap or detergent.
