Blossom Gaiwan
Blossom Gaiwan
Precision and spontaneity are at odds in the work of Huang Li Chia’s ceramic work, thrown and hand built from a gravity defying stoneware clay. From her studio in South Eastern Taiwan, shared with her woodworking partner, the artist considers functionality, expression, and beauty as she creates pieces pared back to reveal each element at its most foundational, in an incredibly successful line of teaware.
Covered in a thick layer of matte engobe, a high clay slurry similar to slip, the exterior of this tall shouldered gaiwan presents hairline crazing and intermittent iron freckles, akin the the surface of a salt lake or weathered bone, a striking contrast to the traditional form. Inside, the gaiwan is fully glazed, ensuring a water tight brewing experience.
Pictured is one in a series of 8 similar pieces. Slight variations are possible from piece to piece, a hallmark of hand-made pottery. The piece you receive may be different, but equally beautiful.
Usage and care: To clean between uses, simply rinse the gaiwan with hot water and air dry.
