Stoneware・Shino・Cobalt・Wood-fired

Hail summer, and with it clear blue skies. Taiwanese potter Liao Guo Hua is a master of gestural mark-making, and in each of his works we find a veritable Rorschach blot awaiting interpretation. In this early summer series, we can’t help but see parallels between the strokes of rich cobalt oxide and creamy shino glaze and the summer sport of cloud glazing. These loose, dreamy marks float in contrast to the form of the pot.

Each vessel has some distinctly geometric element, whether the firm line of its spout, a pronounced hip, or the perfect symmetry of its finial. This tension between hard and soft, delicate and defined, organic and geometric, is at the crux of all Liao Guo Hua’s work. It’s a contrast that keeps the eye coming back again and again, intent on discovering the work anew.

Usage and care: This interior-glazed teapot is suitable for use with all tea types. Simply rinse between uses or hand-wash with mild detergent. A built-in strainer allows for easy brewing and quick, clean evacuation.
