Partial Hand-made・Zhu ni (vermillion clay)・150ml

This little red teapot is based on a traditional zisha form named Wendan. Similar to the Shuiping, this style was popularized during the Ming Dynasty. We’ve pared back the original profile, minimizing and modernizing the form. The result is ebullient, both in character and in shape, with a gently domed lid and complimenting finial that curve outwards like a bubble of soap.

This teapot is made from a high quality vermillion zisha clay called zhu ni. The clay was sourced directly from a zisha production factory in Dingshan, near Yixing. We then worked alongside an independent ceramicist to develop the shape and size we envisioned. From there, the ceramicist created a small mold to ensure consistency, and to ease production.

This pot was crafted partially by hand. Using the mold as a starting point, clay was hand pressed to create the pot’s body. The spout, lid, handle, and burnished finish were all completed by hand.

At 150ml, this teapot is ideal for a personal tea service, and for precise brews of our teas at the recommended dosage and steep time. The porous clay lends itself to use with one particular tea-type. The wall thickness is proportional to the size and capacity of the pot, creating an even balance while pouring. Seven outlets beneath the spout evacuate water quickly and evenly.

Usage and care: Thoroughly rinse particles of sand from the interior before use. Dedicate one tea type per pot. Eventually, a tea pot will be seasoned with the particular character of a tea. Hand-wash only without soap or detergent.
