5 Day Fired Cup, Dark
5 Day Fired Cup, Dark
A reverence for tea drives the work of Taiwanese master potter, Zhang Yun Cheng. His home sits in the hills of Nantou County, surrounded on all sides by tea gardens, a rich tableau of green and misty grey. Against this backdrop, the distinct relationship between craft and culture reflects back in each handmade piece.
These stoneware tea cups provide a map of ash and flame as it moves the the artists wood fired kiln over the five day firing process. The glossy texture and rivulets of green and brown are the result of ash vitrifying on the surface of the clay, creating a striking contrast to the delicate form. Together these qualities create a vessel with visual gravity, belied by the balance and fit in the hand.
