mars-tea-bowl
Mars

Thrown on the potters wheel from a grog rich stoneware, this wide rimmed tea bowl from the Taiwanese artist Zhang Hao Yan hardly seems made, but drawn directly from the depths of the earth. This found, organic quality is enhanced by a multi-day wood firing, charring the exterior with the a mix of carbon-trapping and metallic, burnished flame. Subtle variations in the texture are achieved through hand carving with a fettle knife and the artist’s own fingers, faceting the clay to catch errant drips of glaze or the vitrified rivulets of ash.

The proportions of the tea bowl are particularly well suited to warmer weather drinking; the wide diameter of the form allow steam to escape, tempering the tea to the ambient weather.

This bowl is one of a kind.

Usage and care: To wash, simply rinse between uses or hand scrub.
