Stoneware・Shino・Wood-fired

Zhang Yun Chen’s background in sculpture can be read in the forms of his latest teapot series. An exaggerated hourglass figure and rising profile, lend these little pots an undeniable ebullience as though piping not just with hot tea, but also with cheer. Paired with a thickly layered shino glaze that belies their diminutive size, there’s a distinct push and pull to the form, giving each a sense of liveliness and motion.

Carbon trapping from 6 days in the wood kiln creates an opalescent shine to the surface of the pot that will increase over time as oils from the tea leaves come in contact with the glaze. Stoneware pots can be used with all tea types. Loose-leaf tea is strained through honeycombed perforations behind the spout, which pours cleanly and quickly. Variations between pots are natural, and a mark of all hand-crafted work.

Usage and care: Unglazed wood-fired pieces will season very slowly over time, though limited porosity allows for use of different tea types. Exterior of the teapot will deepen in color and develop a rich luster with use. Hand-wash only without soap or detergent.
