Textured Shiboridashi

Stoneware・Wood-fired

Simple in gesture and form, this shiboridashi from Taiwanese artist Zhang Yun Cheng is thrown into contrast by a heightened sense of materiality. Here sand and grog break through the dark stoneware, pebbling the surface of the pot with uneven texture. No glaze hides these bumps and ridges, instead a sheen of calcified ash and blush of smoke dance across the surface of the vessel, cataloging the route of flame throughout the wood-fired kiln.

After 6 number of days in the kiln, the artist further enhanced the opalescence of clay by soaking the pot in tea, allowing the oils of the leaves seep into the clay. This quality will continue to develop with continued brewing, giving a life beyond the artist's studio to each pot in his collection.

*Please take note that each pot can be slightly different in color tone and texture. It is not unusual to have areas of thicker ash glazing, and/or colorations that reflect the different interactions between the mineral content of the clay body and flow of flame and ash inside the kiln. Each shiboridashi is similar but also unique, and may not be identical to the photographed item.

Usage and care: Hand-wash only, without soap or detergent.
