Stoneware・Celadon

This delightful series from artist Liao Guo Hua is an homage to ceramic history, and a stunning example of the artist’s mastery of glazes.

Celadon is an ancient, highly prized glaze, whose origins predate the Song Dynasty. It was created from a mix of feldspar, kaolin, and iron oxide in an attempt to mimic the color and texture of Jade, which at the time, was more highly prized by in China than gold.

Like tea, glaze too can be understood through its terroir, with each shade of celadon shedding insight on its origins. This variation is inspired by the pale-blue color of traditional Ru kiln pottery. Controlled firing gives the thick, exceptionally smooth glaze a buttery, matte finish. Subtle crazing, and scattered “beauty spots”- tiny freckles that rise from this iron-rich clay body- can be seen throughout.

This little teapot features classic, simple proportions- a high-shouldered body, unassuming finial and throated spout, and a gently lobed handle at the back. The minimalism of the form allows Liao Guo Hua’s celadon to shine. Ten drainage holes and an expertly crafted spout allow for easy pouring.

Usage and care: Glazed both inside and out, these teapots are suitable for use with all tea types. Simply rinse between uses, or hand wash with a mild detergent.

*Please take note that each pot can be slightly different in color tone, texture, size, and shape. It is not unusual to have areas of thicker glazing, and or colorations that reflect the different interactions between the mineral content of the clay body and glaze. Each teapot is hand made and unique, and may not be identical to the photographed item.
